From Scratch Cupcakes: Columbus Wedding Vendor Spotlight
Vendor spotlights are one of my favorite things to publish because it gives me the opportunity to introduce you to some of the best people in the business who can inevitably make your wedding dreams come true! Also, on a more selfish note, it allows me to spend time with some of my favorite friendors! One of the many perks to this job is meeting and working with incredible small business owners in the wedding industry.
Riley Harris with From Scratch Cupcakes is no exception. I first met Riley at the grand re-opening of the Columbus Luxeredux Bridal Boutique in the Short North. I was instantly impressed! I distinctly remember her telling me how she circled the block before coming into the party to make sure her outfit was suitable for the occasion because she had a backup in the car if she needed to change! Of course she looked effortlessly chic—especially compared to my big, pregnant self at the time. I loved her vulnerability and honesty she conveyed right off the bat. She truly is such a fun and sweet person!
However, no matter how much I’ve enjoyed getting to know Riley, it doesn’t compare to how much I’ve enjoyed eating her delicious desserts! Haha! Seriously, they are even better than they look and that is saying a lot.
Riley first started From Scratch Cupcakes as a 13-year-old out of her parent’s kitchen. She has grown that business over the past 7 years earning some major accreditations along the way. She received 5 diplomas from the Peggy Porschen Academy in London, which is famous for baking for countless celebrities and royal weddings!
We had so much photographing all of her beautiful cakes and goodies at Zurie photo studio in downtown Columbus. The women at Zurie are always such a joy to work with and the space never disappoints with its abundance of natural light! Petal + Stem Floral Design Co. provided some absolutely beautiful flower arrangements that were the perfect addition to the shoot. Just wait until you see my adorable photo assistant who tagged along—although she did mostly just snuggle and nap the entire time.
I hope you enjoy the chance to learn a little more about From Scratch Cupcakes and the eye candy that is the spring collection!
Tell me a little about the spring collection we photographed— Where did you find your inspiration for the collection?
The spring collection was inspired by my love for fresh flowers, fruit and simplicity. A lot of what I do is very over the top and this year I wanted to create something lovely and simple.
When did you know you wanted to become a professional baker?
I never knew I wanted to own a bakery, but the older I got the more I realized I didn’t want a traditional office job. Baking has given me the opportunity to turn my hobby and passion into a career.
How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
Hardworking, adventurous and tired! Haha I’m sure every other business owner feels the same way!
How would you describe clients who are a great fit for you?
Definitely someone who cares about TASTE and look. Everything we do is baked from scratch, because it’s so important to me that things not only look good, but taste great!
What was one of your favorite weddings you worked on, and why?
My favorite wedding so far has been with Auburn and Ivory Creative! It was a winter wedding and there was “frosted” fruit and greenery everywhere! Together, we created the most gorgeous donuts together.
What has surprised you the most about your business?
The most surprising part of my business has definitely been the love and support I’ve received from the Columbus community!
What is the one thing you'd like a prospective bride to know about you?
We baked everything from scratch and our designs are one of a kind.
What do you love most about running your own business?
The thing I love most about running my own business is definitely the opportunity to create something; even small things, like a new flavor or classic cake design. I love the creative side of it.
What are some big picture goals you're dreaming of?
I would love a store front! That’s always been my goal from day 1. Fingers crossed!!
What keeps you coming back day after day?
The overwhelming support I’ve received not only from customers, but other small business owners!
What do you love to do when you're not working?
That’s a great question! Sometimes I feel like I’m never NOT working, but if I do get a break I love to travel or go new places!
How can brides get in touch?
The best way to get in touch with us is through email. Our process time is about 2-3 business days.
And lastly, where can everyone find you this summer to enjoy your goodies?
I’m so excited to announce that you can find us this summer at The North Market on Saturday and Sundays and the Worthington + Dublin market on Saturdays!
